It Shall Not Return Empty

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,…” Isaiah 55:10

to sow; figuratively, to disseminate, plant, fructify:—bear, conceive seed, yield seed, set with sow(-er), yield.

As the Eastern Seaboard has a major winter storm hitting it as I type these words, I visualize the water cycle in full force…from rain/snow to watering the earth, to growing the crop, and yielding seed to the sower, producing food to eat.  It is a natural cycle which produces much.

There has been news of dread for this storm to hit. It makes me think of the Western coast of the USA which needs rain and snow to relieve the people and the land of years of drought.  Texas and other states were in drought for a number of years, but the water cycle kicked in and deeply soaked the earth in this area.  We want water and need it for survival.

Isaiah 55:11 says…

“…so shall My Word be that goes out from My mouth;
it shall not return to Me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

רֵיקָם

emptily; figuratively (objective) ineffectually, (subjective) undeservedly:—without cause, empty, in vain, void.

Just as the water cycle yields seed for future crops, God’s Word yields seeds for the new harvest of His children.  His Word does not spin around in the air without producing that which God purposes.  It does not return void, as some versions of the Bible say.  The Word of God is needed for survival as water.

Father, Your world is amazing.  You have created so much and it all works together for Your good and Your glory.  A tiny seed can sow food or flowers or a lush green plant or a tree.  The seed of Your Word can also sow Mighty ones in Your Name.  You grow us to look and act more and more like Your Son as we delve into Your Word even more.  You grow us so that we can take the seed and sow it further and further.  Thank You, LORD.  May the beauty of Your Name be upon our tongues.  In the Name of Jesus, I pray.  Amen.
